Cataract Surgery Q & A

What are cataracts?

Cataracts refer to an eye condition involving cloudy vision.

The lens of your eye is normally clear, but a cataract causes the lens to become cloudy, and eventually, your vision is affected. Many people describe cataracts as seeing through a frosted or foggy window.

What is cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery is a surgical procedure during which the natural lens of your eye is removed. In most cases, the lens is replaced with a special artificial lens.

Cataract surgery is typically an outpatient procedure that usually takes around an hour. Cataract surgery can be performed in different ways — either using ultrasound energy or laser-assisted technology to remove the cloudy lens.

The artificial lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL), and it works to improve your vision by focusing light on the back of your eye. You won’t be able to feel or see the lens, and it doesn’t require any care. It simply becomes a permanent part of your eye.

There are different IOLs available with different features. Your optometrist can walk you through your options and help you decide what’s best for you. IOLs are derived from plastic, acrylic, or silicone, and some can even block ultraviolet light.

Most IOLs are flexible and allow for a smaller incision requiring few or no stitches. Your surgeon folds this type of lens and carefully inserts it into the empty capsule where your natural lens used to be. Once it’s inside your eye, the IOL unfolds and fills the empty capsule.

Why would I need cataract surgery?

Cataracts can cause blurry vision, increase the glare from lights, and cause many other problems that can negatively impact your daily life. If a cataract is making it difficult for you to carry out your normal daily tasks and activities, your optometrist might suggest surgery.

Your optometrist might also recommend surgery when a cataract interferes with the treatment of another eye condition or problem.

You have time to consider your options, and your optometrist takes time to explain the procedure in detail, so you know what to expect and feel prepared.

Don’t just deal with impaired vision and the many problems that can occur as a result. Call the Columbia Eye Associates & Family Focus Eye Care to discuss if cataract surgery is the right treatment for you. You can also use the convenient online scheduling system.
